Call for Papers – Geopolitical Challenges and Urban Diplomacy

Geopolitical Challenges and Urban Diplomacy
Online Conference (Teams)
20 March 2026 (Friday)

In an era of shifting power and fractured sovereignty, cities have moved beyond their traditional administrative roles to become autonomous, outspoken actors on the global stage. Our upcoming online conference, “Geopolitical Challenges and Urban Diplomacy” explores how municipalities – from Warsaw to Taipei – are navigating global crises such as the war in Ukraine, migration, and climate change independently of national governments. We invite scholars and practitioners to submit papers that examine this “pragmatic internationalism” and the innovative ways cities exert soft power and moral leadership. Join us to discuss how local governance has become a frontline arena for geopolitical responsibility and strategic problem-solving.

The webinar is co-organized by the University of Lodz (Paradiplomacy Lab – Centre for Studies on Paradiplomacy and City Diplomacy) and ELTE Centre for Economic and Regional Studies (Institute for Regional Studies).

Abstract Submission:
Deadline: January 24, 2026
Notification of acceptance: February 8, 2026
